When the products we love can make us sick

Outbreaks of Listeria and other signs of illness in popular products have popped up across the country this year, resulting in hundreds of hospitalizations and multiple deaths caused by exposure.

Several listeria-related recalls are still occurring across the country. From deli meats to peanuts and even mushrooms, several major outbreaks and recalls have been announced by authorities since January. One of the biggest is the ongoing outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meat, which has left 10 dead and 49 sickened in 19 states.

  • What is listeria? Listeria is a foodborne bacterial illness and the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States.
  • Latest listeria risk includes frozen pancakes and waffles. Tasty breakfast treats sold at Publix, Target, Walmart and other major retailers are included in a TreeHouse Foods recall related to possible listeria contamination.
  • What is being done about these recalls? Some ended. Others are in progress. In the Boar’s Head case, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is investigating the USDA’s handling of reported violations at the Virginia plant linked to a multistate listeria outbreak.

🥞 What should you do? Check your refrigerator and freezer for any of the listed products and discard them. If you want a refund, return the product to the store where you purchased it.

‘White Gold’ in Arkansas Could Be Extremely Valuable

Arkansas may be home to a vast resource that could reshape the world’s energy needs: a valuable battery component called lithium, dubbed “white gold” and “the new gasoline.” The US Geological Survey suggests that this week the US could have all the lithium it needs in ancient brine, which dates back to the Jurassic period and is buried deep in southern Arkansas. It’s an important discovery because renewable energy needs batteries and many batteries need lithium. But the resource is scarce worldwide, especially in America. read more

See why diabetes patients are concerned

Over the past year, many insulin-dependent patients have faced shortages, delays and bureaucracy from pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies. The insulin supply shortage comes as diabetes patients increasingly turn to drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, part of a new category of weight-loss drugs approved to treat type 2 diabetes. Pharmaceutical companies have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in industrial production to keep up with the voracious demand of American consumers who want these medications for diabetes, weight loss and other conditions. Here’s what people with diabetes told USA TODAY about waiting for care.
