Mike McCarthy Addresses Kicker’s Bizarre Reason for Missing Practice

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey missed Wednesday’s practice for one of the more unusual reasons seen in recent memory — jury duty.

The 2023 Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro remained away from the team Thursday afternoon due to his other responsibilities, but coach Mike McCarthy said the bizarre circumstances were not a concern.

According to a report from ESPN’s Todd Archer, Aubrey will kick with long snapper Trent Sieg and punter/holder Bryan Anger once his Thursday jury duty is over.

“Hey, just when you think you’ve seen it all in this place,” McCarthy said, according to Archer’s report. “You have something else to do.”

Stuck at 3-3 and with several negative headlines surrounding the organization during their Week 7 bye, the Cowboys can’t afford to go without their sophomore in Week 8 against the San Francisco 49ers on “Sunday Night Football.”

Aubrey led the NFL in field goals scored (36) last season while also earning two NFC Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Month awards. Aubrey was third in the league with his 94.73% field goal percentage and was particularly lethal on his longer attempts, going 10 of 10 on attempts from at least 50 yards away.

After a sensational debut campaign, the former software engineer and MLS and USFL player has arguably been even better in 2024.

Aubrey is on pace to break last season’s mark of 36 field goals with 17 goals in six games.

Louis made a career-long 65-yard field goal (one shy of the NFL record) earlier this season and was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September.

Aubrey’s jury schedule may still be up in the air, but it looks like Dallas will have its underrated superstar for Sunday primetime.
