Interstate 84 closed between Twin Falls and Jerome due to an accident

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Interstate 84 between Jerome and Twin Falls is closed due to a serious crash.

According to the Idaho Transportation Department website, all eastbound and westbound lanes are closed between Exit 168 and Exit 173.

According to Idaho State Police, a semi-truck experienced a vehicle malfunction while traveling westbound on Interstate 84 around 2 p.m. The truck then struck the center barrier on the highway.

The truck then pushed the center barrier into the eastbound lanes and struck cars traveling eastbound, according to police. The truck then turned on its side and caught fire. The driver managed to escape from the truck while it was on fire.

According to the Jerome Rural Fire District, it took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire. Several people were injured and Idaho State Police said there were no fatalities.

According to Idaho State Police, officers are diverting eastbound traffic onto Golf Course Road. Officers are diverting traffic westbound onto North US Highway 93 and westbound on Idaho Route 25. Idaho State Police are encouraging motorists to avoid the area.

Idaho State Police are currently investigating the incident.
