Florida man shoots ex-wife and her siblings

A woman fighting over her ex-husband with his new girlfriend was shot by the man on Sunday when the new lover called him for help, DeLand police said.

The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Springdale Court in the Spring Hill community at 8:36 p.m.

Bertram Martin, 30, also known as “C,” was charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was being held without bail Monday at the Volusia County Branch Jail.

More charges against Martin are possible because the shooting remains under investigation, DeLand city spokesman Chris Graham said.

“(The women) began fighting over Bertram, which ended with (the ex-wife) smashing his driver’s side window,” investigators wrote in an arrest report.

In a video of the incident, police said the girlfriend yelled “C” several times and then Martin appeared in the video with a gun pointed at his ex-wife.

Investigators said they saw a muzzle flash and the 30-year-old ex-wife fell to the asphalt. Martin then walked towards the ex-wife’s 28-year-old brother, shooting several times. The man lies collapsed in a wood pile by the side of the road, the report said.

Martin also shot the ex-wife’s 33-year-old sister, police said.

All victims were transported to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford. The ex-wife’s brother is in critical condition, Graham said Monday.

Police were able to talk to the ex-wife and her sister at the hospital. Both identified Martin as the person who shot them, police said.

Martin refused to talk to police at the scene of the shooting, but later turned himself in at the DeLand Police Department, investigators said.

Court records show Martin and his ex-wife officially divorced on August 29.

Martin has also previously been arrested for pulling a gun during an argument in 2012.

Court records show Martin was arrested in 2018 for pointing a gun at his sister during an argument over financial issues. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improper display of a firearm/dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors have not charged Martin in that case, according to court records.
