Darlington County School District is expanding its esports program

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – One Pee Dee school district is giving more students a chance to get in on the game.

The Darlington County School District said Thursday it is expanding its esports program to all three high schools: Lamar High School, Hartsville High School and Darlington High School.

The district said in its announcement that the vision would be expanded due to increased interest and the installation of individual arenas at each school.

Lamar High School’s arena is already completed, while Darlington High School’s is nearing completion. Construction on an arena for Hartsville High School will begin soon, officials said.

The district added that students attending Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology will compete with their home school teams.

Each arena will be designed to accommodate ten active teammates simultaneously, with dedicated gaming consoles for each participant, a live streaming and coaching station, as well as a dozen screens and a seating area where fans and families can watch practices and games.

All three programs will also compete this weekend at the Florence Center’s “Stay Pugged In” tournament. The Hartsville High and Darlington High “Rocket League” teams will also compete in Myrtle Beach on Nov. 14.

The district’s program also includes teams for ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ and ‘Valorant’.

“Our eSports program is designed to not only foster a love of gaming, but also teach valuable life skills such as communication, critical thinking and sportsmanship,” said DCSD eSports head coach Daniel Frump in a statement. “We are excited to offer our students this unique opportunity that aligns with their interests and prepares them for future success.”
