Fatal hit-and-run suspect turns himself in after Monument crash

MONUMENT, Colo. (KKTV) – A man has turned himself in to authorities after a fatal collision in Monument.

The crash happened on Monday in the parking lot of a McDonald’s east of I-25 at Baptist Road. When authorities arrived, they found 47-year-old Kristy Kerst. Medical assistance was provided to Christmas, but she died. Monument police have requested assistance from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.

A suspicious photo was shared with the public showing a man driving and a female passenger. On Thursday, the sheriff’s office provided an update on the case.

“Yesterday, 41-year-old Joel Lang turned himself in at the Colorado Springs Police Department Stetson Hills Substation,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release. “The sheriff’s office took Mr. Lang into custody and recovered the vehicle used in the incident.”

Lang is charged with second-degree murder, vehicular homicide and failure to report an accident resulting in death. As of Thursday, he was being held in the El Paso County Jail on $50,000 bond.
