UW System President: Tents are illegal, ‘period’

MADISON — Tent encampments on the UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee campuses will be destroyed, the head of the UW system promised.

“We have camps that are illegal. Period,” Jay Rothman, president of the Universities of Wisconsin, told WTMJ’s Wisconsin’s Morning News. “These camps must ultimately be destroyed. »

Rothman would not say when the tents might be removed.

UW faculty and staff were also expected to rally in support of protesters Monday afternoon.

“Faculty and staff have the same rights as students under the First Amendment,” Rothman said. “As long as they exercise (these rights)

legally, this is something we will certainly protect.
