Arizona DPS trooper involved in shooting caught on camera

DETAILS:

  1. According to DPS radio traffic:
  2. Just after 1:50 a.m. Sunday morning, officers received a report of a 911 call behind an older model white sedan driving recklessly eastbound on Loop 202.
  3. The caller then said the vehicle turned south on L-101 toward University Drive.
  4. The vehicle struck the central partition before coming to rest in the HOV lane.
  5. Officers arrived and parked behind the car and attempted to make contact with the driver.
  6. Police became concerned that the driver was attempting to drive away from the scene given his behavior.
  7. A second officer arrived and positioned his unmarked patrol car in front of the suspect to prevent him from fleeing.
  8. The officers asked the driver several times to exit the vehicle, but he refused.
  9. The police decided to use a pepper gun to force the driver out of his vehicle.
  10. Pepper balls were deployed and the suspect continued to barricade himself in his vehicle.
  11. Additional resources, including a Tempe police officer equipped with a ballistic shield, were called to the scene to assist with the barricade situation.
  12. When the Tempe officer arrived, the driver began accelerating into the back of the unmarked Tahoe.
  13. The officers approached the passenger side door and broke the window before opening fire on the driver.
  14. Officers deployed a drone to inspect the vehicle and determine if the suspect was still moving around inside the vehicle.
  15. Eventually, a police K9 was deployed to the vehicle.
  16. The driver was removed from the car and pronounced dead by Tempe Fire.
