Boy, 15, caught with gun during Naperville traffic stop: cops

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — A 15-year-old Aurora boy is facing criminal charges after police say he was arrested with a semi-automatic handgun during a traffic stop in Naperville.

The teen was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor possession of ammunition without a FOID card in connection with the May 5 incident.

Around 3:15 a.m. on the above date, police said they stopped the teen in a Nissan Altima for improper lane use near the intersection of Iroquois and Washington. While talking with the teen, officers saw him go behind the driver’s seat, where they spotted a loaded CPX 2 handgun, according to a news release.

Police say the teen took the gun out of a safe at his mother’s home and then left with the gun and the car without his mother’s permission.

“Allegations that a 15-year-old boy took his mother’s car and gun without her knowledge and was found shortly after 3 a.m. while driving through Naperville are extremely disturbing,” the district attorney said. DuPage County Robert Berlin in a statement. .

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres added, “It is quite disturbing that someone so young would engage in such reckless and allegedly criminal behavior, but I am extremely grateful for the proactive efforts of our officers, who intervened and potentially prevented further crimes from being committed. “.

The teen is due in court on June 14.
