Michelle Yeoh’s Netflix show canceled after one season

Michelle Yeoh’s Netflix series The Brothers Sun has been canceled after just one season (via Variety).

The crime drama is set in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley and revolves around Taiwanese gangster Charles Sun (played by Justin Chien). When his father is murdered in Taipei, Charles goes to Los Angeles to protect his estranged mother (played by Yeoh) and younger brother (played by Sam Song Li).

The eight-episode series, created and executive produced by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, landed on Netflix on January 4. The cast also included Highdee Kuan and Joon Lee.

Although it was described by VarietyTV critic Aramide Tinubu as “a thrilling and brilliant comedy-drama about family obligations, buried skeletons and the bonds that can never be broken”, the series was ultimately canceled two just months after its release.

Tinubu described Yeoh’s performance as “ruthless and commanding”, while also praising her television leads: “While this provides Yeoh with a showcase that she more than deserved, the series also features Dog and Li as two mega talents who will no doubt continue to grace our screens. “.

Chien took to Instagram to express his gratitude and sadness over the news of the cancellation, sharing an image of him and his colleagues and a heartfelt caption.
