Woman is shocked when she compares the ingredients of American ketchup and Canadian ketchup

A Canadian woman living in the United States was stunned by what she discovered when she examined two bottles of Heinz ketchup – one made in the United States and one in Canada – and her findings went viral.

TikToker and former personal shopper Ray (@heyyitsrayyyy) received more than 1.3 million views, 135,000 likes, 8,000 saves and 5,600 comments when she uploaded the video to her account.

This isn’t the first time mysterious food ingredients have gone viral on the app. Recently, a concerned TikToker gained over 5.5 million views when he spotted a warning about a fish ingredient on a bag of Great Value mini marshmallows at Walmart.

But Ray’s video is unique in that it compares the exact same brand – and seemingly the same product – with very different ingredient results.

In the video – captioned “6 months of living in the US and the food is honestly making me sick – Ray compares two bottles of ketchup, one she bought in the US and one she bought in Canada on a recent trip home. Each bottle lists the same ingredients as on the Heinz US and Heinz Canada websites:

  • Heinz Tomato Ketchup (America): Ripe red tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder, natural flavor.

  • Heinz Tomato Ketchup (Canada): Tomato paste (from fresh and ripe tomatoes), sugar, vinegar, salt, spices.

While both countries produce organic, no/low sodium, and no/low sugar varieties, only Heinz US produces a variety called Simply Tomato Ketchup – whose ingredient list still appears quite different from the variety Canadian standard of Heinz Tomato Ketchup:

  • Simply Tomato Ketchup: Tomato concentrate made from ripe red tomatoes, distilled vinegar, cane sugar, salt, onion powder, spice, natural flavor (or) tomato concentrate made from ripe red tomatoes, distilled vinegar, sugar, salt, onion powder, spice, natural flavor.

Ray’s TikTok isn’t the only one comparing ingredients found in American foods to those in other countries. Last year, @foodinsider detailed the differences between UK-made and US-made McDonald’s fries.

Just like in Ray’s video, the ingredients listed in @foodinsider’s comparison are the same as those listed on the McDonald’s US and McDonald’s UK websites:

  • World Famous Fries (America): potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor (wheat and milk derivatives)*), dextrose, acid pyrophosphate sodium (maintain color), salt. *Natural Beef Flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients.

  • McDonald’s Fries (United Kingdom): potatoes, non-hydrogenated vegetable oils (rapeseed), dextrose (mostly added at the start of the potato season).

“They don’t care if we are healthy”

More than 5,600 TikTokers took to Ray’s comments section to express their shock at his findings.

“Is there a way to order groceries from another country?” Because this is insane,” wrote @hollyeekitty.

“They don’t care if we are healthy. They care about making money,” commented @lisamariemahan.

“You can buy ‘cleaner’ ketchup in America, but it costs more,” wrote @iamsam0616.

At this point, the Heinz store on Amazon sells a 20 oz. bottle of Heinz Simply Tomato ketchup for $3.98, while a 20 oz. A bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup sells for $3.48.

With more and more TikTokers using the app to compare international ingredients, it’s likely there are many more shocking discoveries to come.
