Top three available NFL free agents the Colts should consider signing before training camp

The Indianapolis Colts and many others still have plenty of cap space at their disposal.

And three free agents stand out above the rest that I think the Colts should seriously consider signing before their training camp begins this summer.

Top 3 free agents for the Colts

1. Justin Simmons, S.
The number one player the Colts should consider signing is former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons. Every player on this list has played at a high level, but Simmons is the only one who hasn’t taken much of a step back in recent years. I think the main reason he’s still a free agent is because he wants to get paid more than the typical free agency signing that happens this late in free agency. But the Colts’ needs at FS are enormous, and Simmons would help raise both the floor and ceiling of the Colts secondary. And I think he’s worth paying a lot more than the other free agents I’ve listed below.

2. Queller Diggs, S
If the Colts don’t want to pay the price that likely comes with a player of Simmons’ caliber, then I think Quandre Diggs is another great option. Over the past two seasons, Diggs has noticeably taken a step back as a player, but he would still be a considerable upgrade over the Colts’ current options at FS. He also has a pre-existing relationship with Colts CB Kenny Moore II. So, I think he would have a hard time getting used to the locker room. And his knack for playing around the ball would be a big win for the Colts defense.

3. Xavien Howard, CB
I think the best position for the Colts in free agency is safety. But if they chose to take a different route, former Miami Dolphins CB Xavien Howard. Howard, like Diggs, has visibly taken a step back as a player. But the Colts’ zone-heavy system has allowed several veteran CBs to find success after a down season. Two that come to mind are Xavier Rhdoes and Stephon Gilmore, and Howard would make perfect sense to be next. The Colts’ young CB room has plenty of upside, but adding a veteran like Howard can help the team avoid the bumps we saw last season and stabilize the current game without losing the chance to develop their young CBs for the future.
