Amber Heard breaks her silence on Aquaman 2’s Mera controversy

  • Amber Heard has thanked fans for their “overwhelming support” for her Aquaman character Mera.

  • Mera has a significantly reduced role in the franchise’s latest film, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”

  • She previously said she had to fight to stay in the film.

Amber Heard broke the silence surrounding her role in the “Aquaman” sequel on Instagram Wednesday with a short message thanking her fans for “the overwhelming support and love during Mera’s return to AQ.”

“After all this time, Aquaman 2 was a sensation (sorry, that’s too easy). Thank you to all my fans for their unwavering support and love during the return of Mera’s AQ,” she wrote . “Thank you so much. #aquaman.”

It was Heard’s first Instagram post since July and the first time she spoke about her role as Mera in the “Aquaman” sequel, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” in months.

Heard has been largely absent from the film’s press cycle, but she’s been a talking point — especially since she only has 11 lines in the sequel.

Many had speculated that Heard’s reduced role was due to her contentious legal battles with ex-husband Johnny Depp. In March 2019, a Change.org petition was filed urging the producers of “Aquaman 2” to remove Heard from the film. It has collected more than 4.6 million signatures.

During Depp’s defamation trial against Heard in 2022, Heard said she had to fight to stay in the film and that the studio “didn’t want to include me in the film.”

“I was given a script, and then new versions of the script that removed the action scenes that depicted my character and another character – without giving away any spoilers – two characters fighting against each other,” she said about staying. “They basically took a lot of my role away from me. They just took out a bunch. »

In October, Variety published a report claiming that Heard’s role in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” was saved by her ex-boyfriend, Elon Musk. Musk, the outlet reported, sent a “scorched earth” letter to Warner Bros. “threatening to burn the house down” if it were to be pulled from production.

But director James Wan told Entertainment Weekly that he never planned for Heard to co-direct the sequel.

“I always pitched that to everyone from the start. The first Aquaman was Arthur and Mera’s journey,” he said. “The second movie was always going to be Arthur and Orm. So the first one was a romantic action-adventure movie, the second one is a bromance action-adventure movie. We’ll leave it at that.”
