El Paso man electrocuted, woman electrocuted in jacuzzi in Puerto Peñasco resort

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An El Paso man died after being electrocuted in a hot tub Tuesday evening, June 11, at a private resort in Puerto Peñasco, according to the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office .

The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office said Jorge Guillen, 43, and his wife, Lizzette Zambrano, 35, were in a hot tub shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Penasco.

The attorney general’s office says Guillen was electrocuted and Zambrano suffered life-threatening injuries due to a possible wiring failure.

Zambrano was transferred to an area hospital and was told she had burns consistent with an electric shock, according to the attorney general’s office.

Zambrano was then transported to the United States, where she is currently in critical condition.

The attorney general’s office said a witness close to the couple reported noticing the couple was in the hot tub and not moving.

The witness told officers on scene that she tried to get into the hot tub after the couple was unresponsive. However, as she tried to get into the jacuzzi, she was shocked. The witness then called for help.

The Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de Sonora (FGJES) is currently investigating the incident.

Western Technical College in El Paso responded to the incident, saying Guillen was a refrigeration/HVAC evening student and was scheduled to graduate this Friday, June 14.

Guillen was previously employed as a detention officer at the Otero County Processing Center from 2011 to 2018.

“We are saddened to learn of the loss of Mr. Guillen, who was an excellent employee and friend. We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” the treatment center said.

Zambrano worked as a teacher at East Point Elementary School until 2022, according to the Ysleta Independent School District.
