The official had to go to the Armagh dressing room after a twenty-minute half-time break

Armagh spent almost twenty minutes in the dressing room during the half-time break of their All-Ireland group stage match against Galway.

They eventually came out of the locker room at Markievicz Park, but only after one of the referee’s officials entered their locker room to tell them to come out.

A member of Armagh’s backroom team stood outside the dressing room as RTÉ cameras captured the commotion, with Galway players waiting on the pitch for several minutes.

Speaking during Sunday’s match, Ciaran Whelan said it was a case of “gamesmanship” from Ulster, while Lee Keegan said it was down to their poor performance in the first half.

Armagh played with the wind at their backs in the first half but were unable to press home the advantage at Markievicz Park.

Instead, they went into the break losing by two points, by a score of 0-8 to 0-6.

Armagh improved after their lengthy team talk, with Tiernan Kelly’s second half goal taking them straight back into the game.

The teams were level with two minutes remaining before a long-range free kick from Shane Walsh gave Galway the lead. Stefan Campbell leveled the match in the final moments of extra time with a fist point for a final score of 1-12 to 0-15.

With their greater score difference, the draw had more value for Armagh and they now qualify directly for the All-Ireland quarter-finals, with Galway heading to the preliminaries.

“I think the twenty minutes of talk at half-time helped them,” Lee Keegan later joked.
