The annual tournament showcasing the best youth rugby talent South Africa has to offer will kick off on Monday 17 June at Gray High School in Qqeberha, and will end on Friday June 21.

Last year, the Blue Bulls snuck in through the backdoor to win the title of unofficial champions of the prestigious tournament. This came after Western Province lost their place in the match against high-flying Free State due to non-compliance with SA Rugby regulations.

The Blue Bulls beat Free State in a humdinger, securing a hard-fought 20-12 victory, while Western Province triumphed at the curtain-raiser, hanging on to claim a narrow 10-5 win over the Gauteng Golden Lions. and securing a flawless sweep, which also included a victory over the victorious Blue Bulls earlier in the week (25-18) to remain undefeated.

The 2024 tournament, however, might not offer as much on-court drama as it would on this one. As the creme de la creme of the country’s under-16s come together to battle it out, the three days of action scheduled promise to keep supporters glued to their seats with mouth-watering champagne rugby.

The defending champions won’t be too relaxed when they kick off their title defense against the Western Province XV side. The WP XV is the second player from the union who also gets a chance to showcase his skills in the tournament. Runners-up Free State will face the unpredictable KwaZulu-Natal Sharks in their first encounter of the week.

Western Province will face hosts Eastern Province in the main match of day one. This should be an interesting match-up as the Eastern Cape team has also bulldozed their way to a three-for-three record in 2023. The tug-of-war between the two Southern teams will, no doubt, be a appropriate ending. to what promises to be an exciting first day in the Windy City.
