Believe it or not, my beloved tram is just one of 10 delightfully themed children’s rooms on offer at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong, which recently submitted its entire 45th floor to a whimsical family-themed redesign. You will feel it as soon as the elevator doors open to a Harry Potter– station platform, your arrival greeted by the miniature train which constantly passes above your head.

Another surefire favorite of exhausted adults, the Campervan Haven offers guests the chance to curl up on the roof of a Woodstocky VW-style campervan. Like most other options, it has a ground return that we can only assume adults aren’t actually encouraged to use. (No further comments.)

Aside from the UV light and new bed features, the kid-friendly features families will be most grateful for can be found elsewhere on the 45th floor. The Hangout is a sort of club lounge for young people: instead of caviar, cocktails, armchairs and cigars, expect sweets, candies, coloring books and beanbags. There are even regular workshops for kids – arts, crafts, dances and games, all courtesy of the ever-patient Family Experience team – and a daily ice cream cart, while the basic takeaway pasta dishes (available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily) will undoubtedly be a godsend for hungry little ones on the go.

The centrally located pantry is a thoughtfully designed common space with all the comforts of home, including a washer and dryer, as well as a sink, microwave and other essentials to make it easy to prepare or heat children’s meals.

Less colorful but just as valuable, the eminently practical shared complex The Pantry offers the convenience of appliances – washing machine, dryer, microwave – and everything from strollers to bottle warmers is available to borrow for families far from home.

And for this writer at least, no normal bed will ever feel the same again.
