German law is at the origin of the cancellation of the arrest warrant against Riad Salameh, specifies Judge Iskandar

In response to reports that the German court in Munich canceled the arrest warrant issued against the former governor of the Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, the National News Agency cited judge Helana Iskandar, who clarified that “this news is true”.

Judge Helana Iskandar, head of the Judicial Affairs Authority at the Ministry of Justice, added that the reason for canceling the warrant is that German law requires two combined conditions to be met to issue an arrest warrant. .

First, there must be serious suspicion regarding the accused committing the crime. Additionally, there must be a significant risk that the defendant will flee or attempt to destroy evidence.

In her statement, Judge Iskandar said: “Since the German court annulled the arrest warrant due to the absence of the second condition (…) while confirming the fulfillment of the first condition, … .) the procedures for freezing the arrest warrant for Riad Salameh’s property will remain in force regardless of the presence or absence of an arrest warrant against him.

The press release confirms that “the cancellation of the arrest warrant does not have a negative impact on the procedures for freezing the assets and properties of the accused in Germany.”
