Just Stop Oil targets Taylor Swift’s plane at London airport

Two climate activists from the environmental group Just Stop Oil were arrested on Thursday after they drove through a fence at London’s Stansted Airport and painted private jets orange to protest the use of fossil fuels.

Protesters believed one of the planes parked nearby belonged to pop star Taylor Swift, also known as “the worst offender of CO2 emissions in private jets” among celebrities, according to the company’s 2022 list British Sustainable Marketing Yard.

Just Stop Oil posted a video of activists breaking through a security barrier, followed by a clip of a woman using a fire extinguisher to spray orange paint on at least two private jets. “Jennifer and Cole cut the fence at the private Stansted airfield where Taylor Swift’s plane is parked, demanding an emergency treaty to end fossil fuels by 2030,” the post read of the group on X (formerly Twitter).

According to Essex Police, the singer’s plane was not parked at the airport.

The arrests of Just Stop Oil members came a day after two of the group’s activists were arrested for spraying orange paint on Stonehenge.

Taylor Swift’s use of private jets has drawn widespread criticism. In 2022, its aircraft flew 170 times, with total flight emissions for the year reaching 8,293.54 tonnes. That’s 1,184.8 times more than the average person, Yard said.
