Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool ‘requested information’ to sign Euro 2024 star who shocked Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool are beginning to solidify their transfer plans for Arne Slot’s first summer in charge.

The Reds have been quiet on the market so far, which is a bit unusual for them at this point in June.

However, with Slot only just beginning work at the AXA training center and two international tournaments taking place, it should come as no surprise that things have been slow at Anfield.

We hope this should change over the coming weeks. As teams begin to abandon their respective competitions and players go on vacation, Liverpool should be able to make progress.

In the meantime, Slot, his coaching staff and FSG will no doubt be glued to their screens monitoring the Euro 2024 and Copa America goals.

Liverpool in touch with Nico Williams transfer

If Liverpool have followed the action in Germany closely this summer, they will have seen a few potential transfer targets really stand out.

Riccardo Calafiori has been heavily linked with Liverpool and the Italian defender has been good so far, despite scoring an own goal against Spain on Thursday.

This heavyweight match in Gelsenkirchen was also notable for the electric performance of Spanish winger Nico Williams.

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge was impressed by the 21-year-old. Sturridge called Williams “abnormal”; amazed by his speed, skill and direct play on the wings.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool were also impressed by the Athletic Bilbao man. Speaking on his YouTube channel Friday night, Romano said the Reds have been following Williams for a long time.

“English clubs thought about Nico Williams,” explained the transfer expert. “For example, Chelsea had him on their list last summer before they sang Cole Palmer. But also Arsenal, Liverpool, these clubs have asked for information on Nico Williams over the last six or seven months,” he adds.

“The real problem, more than the release clause, was the salary. Salary cost was always a problem. But now Nico is doing wonderfully, so let’s see if the English clubs will reactivate this option.

“There is also strong interest from Barcelona, but it depends on financial fair play. So, Barça will be there on the basis of financial fair play but also Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, these three clubs are still closely monitoring Nico Williams.

“The new release clause in his contract at Athletic Club is €58m (£49m).”

Liverpool face Nico Williams dilemma

If it were as simple as triggering Williams’ release clause, it would seem like a no-brainer for Liverpool.

The Reds are reportedly in the market for a new striker this summer and Williams appears to tick most of the boxes they usually look for.

He is young, reasonably priced and plays with the verve and pace that Liverpool look for in a wide player.

However, as Romano points out, the problem with the Spaniard lies in his wage demands. As journalist Graeme Bailey exclusively told Rousing The Kop last month, Williams is reportedly looking to become Liverpool’s highest-paid player.

If this remains the case, then it is absolutely prohibited. The Reds’ model would dictate that a player of Williams’ age would get a lower contract before being offered a pay raise in two years if he performs.

If the player doesn’t play ball on that, it could be a failure.
