Firefighters said several supporters were injured, but “fewer than 20.”

The disturbing scene was treated as a major incident and the match was postponed.

Players rushed to help and some fans held up a large metal frame to potentially prevent further injury.

A few supporters who escaped the blows were walking around, looking dazed.

And red smoke broke out before the match, adding to the confusion by covering the terraces.

One fan could be seen putting his head in his hands in despair.

Others rushed to try to see how they could help.

Two “trauma helicopters” arrived on the ground as Dutch newspaper Oost reported the scale of the incident.
