Youngstown City schools consider discontinuing busing for high school students

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown City Schools and the Board of Education are reevaluating busing for high school students as bus shortages continue.

The Youngstown City School District said in a statement Monday they are exploring alternatives for transportation such as discontinuing all high school transportation and allowing students to utilize public transportation instead.

The district says they are legally responsible for transporting eligible students to 36 different schools. With growing bus shortages and the recent $2 million withholding penalty due to the busing challenges, the district is struggling to get students to school.

The alternative they mentioned in the statement was to have students use the WRTA instead of school buses.

They said a final decision would be made by the board and they “thank families for their patience and support as we consider the future of transportation at Youngstown City Schools.”
