Copa América 2024 daily recap: Colombia tops Group D after Brazil mistake

Colombia are in control of Group D after Brazil failed to beat Costa Rica in their Copa América group stage opener on Monday.

Here’s everything that happened on the fifth day of Copa América group play:

Colombia 2, Paraguay 1

  • Colombia have now won 14 of their last 19 Copa group stage opening matches, with a record of 14-3-2 (WLD) (since the group stage began in 1975). They have won their last four opening group matches, with a clean sheet in three of them.
  • Colombia have won the last three meetings against Paraguay in the Copa América and are unbeaten in their last six meetings in all competitions, with a record of 4-0-2 (WLD).
  • Colombia is on a 24-match unbeaten streak – 19-0-5 (WLD) in those matches – and they have won nine matches in a row.
  • James Rodríguez became the first player to provide two assists in a Copa América group stage match since André Carrillo did it for Peru against Chile in the 2019 edition.
  • Néstor Lorenzo has not lost as head coach of Colombia, now with a record of 16-0-5 (WLD).
  • Paraguay lost its first Copa América group match for the first time since 1975, when it lost to Colombia 1-0 in the first Copa with a group stage (now 9-2-8, WLD ). Paraguay have not beaten Colombia in the Copa América since 2007, when they won 5-0 against Colombia in the group stage.

Brazil 0, Costa Rica

  • Brazil is now 10-1-1 (WL-) against Costa Rica (all competitions) and 2-0-1 (WLD) against them in Copa América history.
  • Brazil is now 11-2-4 (WLD) in its last 17 matches played on American soil.
  • Brazil had six corners in the first half, more than any other team in the first half of this tournament.
  • Brazil is now 9-3-1 (WLD) against CONCACAF teams in Copa América; it was their first print).
  • Marquinhos played his 16th Copa América match, the third for a Brazilian in the 21st century (Dani Alves, 19; Thiago Silva, 18)
  • Costa Rica got a result (win or draw) against Brazil for the first time since 1960. It had lost nine in a row on Monday.
  • Costa Rica is now 1-3-2 (WLD) in its opening Copa América group stage matches.
  • Costa Rica is the only team so far to have zero shots recorded in the first half of a match.
