Kansas City police SUV hits car that was running stop sign, injuring driver, authorities say

A driver was injured Monday when the car he was driving ran a stop sign and was struck by an SUV belonging to the Kansas City Police Department, authorities said.

A blue Ford Explorer identified as a police vehicle was heading north on Woodland Avenue through the intersection of East 57th Street when a white Mitsubishi Endeavor entered the intersection, Sgt. Phil DiMartino, KCPD spokesman, said Monday. The Endeavor failed to stop at the stop sign as the SUV drove through the intersection and the SUV struck the car, DiMartino said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was transported to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition, DiMartino said. The driver’s injuries do not appear to be life-threatening and there was no one else in the car.

The driver of the police SUV, as well as a passenger, both suffered minor injuries but were not taken to a hospital, DiMartino said.

KCPD is currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Since June 2023, 4,351 people have been injured in traffic accidents related to failure to obey a road sign, according to state data.
