Silent Witness star Liz Carr confirms major role in Hollywood film

From Good Housekeeping

Silent Witness star Liz Carr has left the hit BBC crime drama to appear in her first Hollywood film.

The 47-year-old actress, who has played coroner Clarissa Mullery since 2012, made her exit this week at the end of the show’s 23rd series.

Speaking on the BBC Ouch podcast, Carr revealed she will star in sci-fi drama Infinite alongside Mark Wahlberg and Oscar winner Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Carr said that while she is immensely proud of the way Silent Witness has improved the representation of disabled people on screen, she spent a lot of time “monitoring the show” and often refused to say certain lines that she considered it “problematic”.

“I think over the eight years I kind of controlled the show a lot and worked to make sure it was better and I refused to say certain lines that I thought were problematic,” Carr continued .

“I was asked recently if I was proud of what we had achieved in terms of representation in Silent Witness – Oh, my God, of course I am.”

Carr said she expressed interest in leaving the show in 2018 because she was “just doing the same thing (story-wise) and, as an actress, it just wasn’t that interesting.”

Shortly after making her decision, a new producer was brought on board and promised the actress “the most challenging show you’ve ever had” and “he delivered.”

She added that the “irony” was not lost on her.

In the current series, Carr’s Clarissa had to make a heartbreaking decision about her mother, who has dementia and terminal cancer.

“There are a lot of things there that we’ve never seen before,” she mused. “I think of this relationship of an aging parent with a disabled child. But also of the vision of a disabled woman as a caregiver.

“It was all about disability and nothing else. And it connected us in a way that said, “We’re all experiencing this.” We will all lose parents or someone we love. »

Meanwhile, Carr’s hit film will be directed by Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua and released this summer.

“It’s a great role. I’m thrilled,” she revealed. “I thought, I bet they’re just going to audition wheelchair users and then they’re going to give the part to Tom Cruise.”

For now, Carr’s role is top secret.

Carr will return to our television screens in an upcoming episode of Who Do You Think You Are?

Silent Witness airs on BBC1 at 9pm.
