Silent Hill creator says Slitterhead is Siren’s spiritual successor

Keiichiro Toyama is a well-known figure in the video game industry. He is the creator of the iconic Silent Hill franchise and the cult games Gravity Rush and Siren. Toyama’s next game, Slitterhead, surprised many at Summer Game Fest when it turned out to be much more action-oriented than Silent Hill. According to the creator, Slitterhead is actually a reinterpretation of Siren “as a modern action game.”

In an interview conducted by Famitsu (and translated by Automaton), Keiichiro Toyama was asked about the next Slitterhead. Scheduled for release on November 8, the game appears to be a mix of all of his previous creations, describing the title “fundamental concept” as being “to reinterpret Siren as a modern action game”.

Siren’s inspirations are clear, with Slitterhead and her allowing you to connect to the minds/bodies of NPCs. However, unlike Siren, Slitterhead will allow you to actively control these players, many of whom will have unique combat abilities.

Longtime fans of the Siren series will be happy with Slitterhead, as Toyama revealed that the hijacking feature will include some elements “as a form of fanservice” for those in the know.

The Gravity Rush series has proven that Toyama knows how to make a game with a unique and compelling combat gimmick/feature. Hopefully Slitterhead will be remembered in the long term for more than just its strange name.
