Mobile Regional Airport Launches Nonstop Flight to Washington, D.C.

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Thursday’s historic flight to Dulles Airport marked a milestone for travel opportunities within the Mobile community, as passengers flying from Mobile to Washington, D.C. can now enjoy a nonstop flight twice daily via United Airlines.

Chris Curry, chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority, said it took seven years.

“We realized that Washington, DC was one of our most underserved markets. Looking at the numbers and behavior of people in our area,” Curry said. “So we had the opportunity to continue to tell our story to network planners. We thought Dallas was more popular for us than Washington, Reagan.

This new route to Dulles Airport will open up opportunities for both tourism and business.

Bradley Byrne, President and CEO of Mobile Chamber, said, “I heard anecdotally that yesterday’s flight and today’s flight back were pretty much full. That’s the first day. So what that tells you is there was a lot of demand here, because that demand is showing up and people are sitting in those seats.”

The Mobile Airport Authority chose United Airlines because it was one of Dulles’ largest carriers.

A round-trip flight to Washington starts at $229 on United’s website.

Bryne hopes to gain more service to Chicago, New York, Denver and the West Coast in the future.

“That’s kind of the direction we’d like to go. And the airport authority is working very hard on that,” Bryne said.
