Sir Jack Petchey CBE: a philanthropist who inspired generations

Sir Jack Petchey, a tireless philanthropist, has died peacefully at his home at the age of 98. He leaves behind a legacy of community spirit. Jack was one of the most generous and kind people I have ever known. He was always asking questions about you and was genuinely interested in others. His dry, wicked sense of humour could light up a room. He was completely at home in himself and in the company of others from all walks of life.

Born on July 19, 1925 in East London, Jack Petchey grew up during the Great Depression, an experience which shaped his entrepreneurial spirit and determination. After leaving school at 14, Petchey initially worked in a series of unskilled jobs. His career was pivotal when he joined the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he entered the automobile business and established himself as a successful businessman.

Petchey’s business acumen led to the formation of a highly successful car rental and property empire. Despite his immense business success, Petchey remained down to earth and determined to give back to the community that had supported him. In 1999, he established the Jack Petchey Foundation to inspire and support young people, particularly in London and Essex.

The Foundation, known for its motto ‘Inspiring Young People’, has since awarded over £140 million to youth programmes and projects, empowering over 2 million young people. The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme, one of the Foundation’s flagship initiatives, has recognised and celebrated the achievements of thousands of young people, giving them a sense of pride and achievement.

In recognition of his philanthropic efforts, Jack Petchey was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004 and knighted in 2016 for services to youth.

Sir Jack was known not only for his financial generosity, but also for his commitment to inspiring young people. He frequently attended award ceremonies, spoke with the winners and encouraged them to strive for excellence.

Beyond his philanthropic work, Petchey had a passion for sports and was a significant supporter of various sporting organizations and events. His contributions helped foster the development of young athletes and promote healthy lifestyles among youth.

Sir Jack Petchey leaves behind his wife Frances, a highly respected Royal Sculptor, his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His dedication to youth empowerment and legacy of generosity will continue to inspire future generations.

The Jack Petchey Foundation said: “Sir Jack Petchey’s vision was to recognize the potential in every young person. His belief in the power of positive encouragement and his passion for helping young people achieve their best will remain the cornerstone of the Foundation’s work.

The life of Sir Jack Petchey is a testament to the profound impact an individual can have on his community and beyond. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the enduring spirit of his charitable efforts.
