William Daniels and Bonnie Barlett still ‘surprised’ by each other after 73 years (exclusive)

William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett Daniels took the next step in their relationship as they celebrated 73 years of marriage. But even though they hold the record for Hollywood’s longest marriage, it’s not as big of an event for the longtime couple.

“It seems like we’re breaking records. We both broke a record when we got Emmys on the same night for the same show. That was a record, no one had ever done that,” Bonnie, 95, tells PEOPLE exclusively in a joint interview with William, 97. “Now it seems like in Hollywood, there’s no marriage that’s 73 years old anymore, so we seem to be breaking records.”

Bonnie continues, “We never thought about it at all. It doesn’t matter to us, but it does to other people.”

The couple, who both share Boy Meets World They met while both were students at Northwestern University. After a few years of dating and marrying in 1951, they became parents to two sons, Michael and Robert. (Their firstborn, William Jr., died shortly after birth.)

After all these years, this longtime couple continues to discover more about each other with each passing day.

“You never stop learning. You never stop being surprised. I never know,” Bonnie shares. “Every once in a while he does something, and I wonder, ‘Where did that come from? Where did that come from?’ Or it’s the same with me. We never stop being surprised by what someone does.

Praising his wife of seven decades, Williams said: “She’s a very capable woman. She’s intelligent and I leave a lot of things to her.”

“She’s kind of in charge of all the business, all the money, all that stuff,” the I will return adds the author. “She takes care of it.”

The actor also notes that it’s “important” that Bonnie is “very easygoing,” calling it one of his favorite things about In the middle of the rainbow author.

As for what Bonnie loves most about Williams, “His sense of humor. It’s just amazing. He says funny things all the time, and he always has,” she shares.

The two plan to spend their 73rd wedding anniversary with their families.

“Our oldest son is a great cook, so he’ll probably (cook). Or we’ll go out,” she shares. “It doesn’t matter, as long as it’s family. My granddaughter’s here, Grace’s here. My son’s new friend is here, so we’ll have a great time with all of them, with all of the people that we love.”
