Avinash Sable sets new 3000m steeplechase record

Asian Games Champion Avinash Sand won in the men’s category 3000m obstacle course event at 2024 Senior National Athletics Interstate Championships in Panchkula, Haryana, on Saturday after bettering his own meet record.

Avinash Sable, also a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, won the gold medal after clocking 8:31.75, bettering his previous meet record of 8:33.19. established in Lucknow in 2019. The 29-year-old also holds the national record of 8:11.20.

It was also Sable’s second 3,000m steeplechase race of the season after finishing second at the Portland Track Festival track and field meeting in the United States earlier this month.

Sumit Kumar (8:46.93) won the silver medal while Shankar Swami (8:47.05) settled for bronze.

In the men’s shot put, Tajinderpal Singh Toor won the gold with a best effort of 19.93m in his final attempt.

Toor was expected to miss the Panchkula meet due to an ankle injury and looked unwell after his event.

The inter-State meeting being the final qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for Indian athletes Before the athletics qualification window closed on June 30, the two-time Asian champion failed to reach the men’s shot put Olympic qualifying mark of 21.50m during the qualification period.

He is, however, 25th in the Route de Paris rankings for the men’s shot put. The top 32 athletes eligible for the Route de Paris rankings will earn Olympic quotas when the qualification window and ranking period close on June 30.

Athletes can earn quotas for Paris 2024 for their country either by exceeding the entry standard or through rankings.

Sarvesh Kushare (2.25m) defeated Asian Games silver medalist Tejaswin Shankar (2.21m) in the men’s high jump event. He also equaled the previous meet record at the inter-state meet. Jesse Sandesh won bronze with 2.18m.

Asian Games medalist Parul Chaudhary clinched the gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase after clocking 9:45.70.

Parul set the national record in the event after clocking 9:15.31 at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year, surpassing the Paris 2024 Olympic standard of 9:23.00.

Komal Jagadale clocked 10:12.64 to finish second while Chhavi Yadav settled for bronze after timing her run at 10:13.58.

The Panchkula meet serves as the final selection trials to select the Indian athletics contingent for Paris 2024.

In the men’s long jump, national record holder Jeswin Aldrin had to settle for silver with a modest attempt of 7.75m, with Arya S emerging as the surprise winner with an effort of 7.78m.

Aravinth E won bronze with 7.73m, pushing former national champion Muhammed Anees Yahiya (7.64m) off the podium.

The National Senior Interstate Track and Field Championships conclude on Sunday.
