The iconic floor routine kicks off with a bang as the heavy, pounding beats of Swift’s “…Ready For It?” fill the gym.

She wasted no time in wowing the crowd with a triple and double heart pass, landing perfectly. The rest of her performance went smoothly, except for a misstep when she went out of bounds at 1/10 after her third tumbling pass.

Unsurprisingly, the crowd went wild and the video went viral.

The Meaning of Simone Biles’ Floor Routine

While Simone Biles once again proved why she is the GOAT with her Taylor Swift/Beyoncé floor routine, there is more to the story.

Gregory Milan, the French choreographer behind the routine, said he was inspired by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, a revolutionary modern dance company founded by Ailey in 1958.

According to The New York TimesAiley focused her work on the black American experience and gained international fame with her iconic ballet, “Revelations,” in 1960. The group of dancers is not defined by a particular type of dance, but rather features a mix of diverse styles and techniques, leading to “an artistic fluidity that Milan wanted to instill in Biles’ routine.”

“I wanted to have an Alvin Ailey mindset just because of what they represented,” he told the outlet. “I had in mind at first that she would do something that showed that she was emerging, that she was breaking through the barriers a little bit in gymnastics to say, ‘This is over now, I’m not a little girl anymore.’ After everything I’ve been through, I’m now a businesswoman, I’m a married woman, I’m a happy woman.”

Diving into the choreography

Although it may seem extremely complicated to the audience, Milan says most of the dance moves in Biles’ routine are simple.

“I wanted her to appear noble with something very pure, with her magnificent arms, her gaze. I wanted something more athletic, more square, more geometric,” he said of the choreography.

“Sometimes it doesn’t take much, just a look, a way of positioning your arm, the way you carry a movement, and that’s what Simone has been able to do,” he added. “You can feel that she’s at peace, that she’s happy, that she’s calm, so when she goes to the corner to make her big tumbling passes, she needs to feel grounded, strong, secure to start her tumbling pass.”
