INDEPENDENT NEWS MEDIA

Boboo, an 8-year-old male African lion, was euthanized after veterinarians at the Phoenix Zoo discovered an aggressive form of cancer.

Zoo officials announced Boboo’s death Saturday, saying veterinarians had discovered cancer in his kidneys and spleen.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our eight-year-old male African lion, Boboo, was humanely euthanized. After an initial examination and exploratory surgery, our veterinary team discovered an aggressive form of cancer affecting his kidneys and spleen,” Phoenix Zoo officials said.

During an annual checkup last month, Boboo showed no signs of illness, according to a zoo Facebook post.

Boboo arrived in Phoenix from the Columbus Zoo in 2019 at the age of 3.

“He was well-liked by his keepers, zoo staff and guests, and the zoo would certainly be quieter without his roars and calls,” the post said.

“This has been a time of great sadness but also great joy as Zuri and her two cubs are doing very well and exceeding expectations with their growth,” zoo officials added in their message.

“Zuri has been a great first mom and we couldn’t be more proud. »

This was the first litter sired by Boboo.
