My husband of 5 years left me the day after Mother’s Day

Breaking up with someone over text is always hurtful and immature. But breaking up with your wife over text? That’s definitely a new low.

Samara, a newly married single mother, admitted on TikTok that she was caught off guard by her husband’s sudden decision to leave, and especially by the way he initiated their breakup.

Her husband of 5 years left her the day after Mother’s Day and let her know via text message.

“Two weeks ago, my husband, my partner of five years, decided he was no longer happy and left,” Samara recalls. She insisted there was nothing out of the ordinary about his behavior and that she had no idea he was planning to leave their marriage.

She explained that the day started out normally until they had a small argument. “We got into an argument about how he loaded the dishwasher, and the next thing I know he’s gone,” she said. “And two days later I got a text saying he was done.”

By then, it was late May and Samara was wondering how she was going to pay her various bills, rent, and other financial obligations without the help and support of her husband.

To top it all off, they both have four children together, and Samara is desperately trying to “hold it together” and hide her emotional turmoil for their sake.

“Every day is a roller coaster,” she said. “I have a five-month-old, a daughter with diabetes and an autistic child. I’m going through a lot. I’m trying to figure out what to do with my life right now.”

Ending a marriage deserves more than just a text message. They built a life and a family together, and it is cruel and disheartening for her husband to up and leave without having a conversation with his wife first or even telling her how he felt. The more mature approach would have been to give Samara the opportunity to prepare and possibly resolve the issues he felt – without abandoning him to raise his children alone.

She admitted that becoming a single mother has been a difficult journey.

Samara didn’t hesitate to reveal that her life has been full of challenges since her husband’s sudden departure. She recalls coming home from the hospital five months ago with her newborn baby and being happier than ever with the last piece of the family puzzle she had created with her husband.

“Five months later, my life is turned upside down,” she says. “I feel so alone. Being a single mother is the hardest thing. It’s the weight of everything. Where is my village?”

Unfortunately, becoming a single mother involves many experiences and challenges that can be devastating to a person’s soul. According to a study by the Brookings Institute, 32% of single mothers experience moderate or severe psychological distress, compared to 19% of married mothers. Single mothers are also three times more likely to experience severe psychological distress than married mothers.

Single mothers also tend to struggle financially. The U.S. Census found that nearly 30 percent of single-parent families live below the poverty line, compared to 62 percent of married-parent families. Nearly a quarter of single-parent households in the United States also experience food insecurity, according to the USDA.

To overcome the many obstacles that stand in her way, Samara seeks community – something incredibly valuable, especially in difficult times.

“I need more single mom friends,” she pleaded. “It’s the loneliness that’s going to catch up with me and the feeling that the weight of the world is on my shoulders.”

Meeting others who have experienced the same thing can be a great blessing in the healing journey. Samara doesn’t have to go through this alone, and while it may hurt now, there will come a time soon enough when it won’t.
