“I haven’t slept since my brother was murdered”; Second Annual “Stop the Violence” Rally – WKRG News 5

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – The second annual “Stop the Violence” event took place Saturday afternoon.

The mission is to combat gun violence while providing a safe space for families who have lost a loved one to violence.

Kema Harris’ brother, George Levon Bush, was murdered in January 2021. He was found shot to death in his car in Prichard.

“I never even got a chance to say goodbye to my brother,” Harris said.

The grief over her loss has pushed Harris to advocate for change. She says growing up in Prichard, she became all too familiar with the violent crime that affects people she knows and it’s time to make a difference.

“I haven’t slept since my brother was murdered, but I will not stop or give up until we understand that the violence must end,” Harris said.

The Dotch Community Center was filled with families playing basketball, listening to motivational speakers and cheering on musicians, including the Mobile All-Star drums.

This year’s slogan was “It takes a village to raise a child.” Advocates say it also takes a village to make change happen.

“When I see someone willing to step up and say I want to do something about gun violence, it touches my heart because it means someone is willing to take on that extra burden,” the founder said of White Flag Cease-fire in the United States. Hood, Vaughnie Davis said.

Harris says she plans to hold the event every year.
