Ben Johnson’s message to new West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui after snub

Ben Johnson is leaving for Ipswich Town and has sent a message to new West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui after a snub.

West Ham United have now officially confirmed what most fans already knew: Ben Johnson and Divin Mubama are leaving.

Academy graduates Johnson and Mubama were both at the end of their current contracts with West Ham.

Utility defender Johnson and young striker Mubama have both snubbed previous offers of new contracts with the Hammers.

In fact, it has been claimed that Julen Lopetegui gave West Ham the green light to make a third and final last-minute attempt to convince Johnson to stay.

Hammers confirm double departure of academy graduates

Many believed the Spaniard had shown his faith in Johnson could see him stay at the club he has worked for for 17 years.

But West Ham have officially confirmed Johnson’s departure along with Mubama – who has been linked with Sunderland.

Johnson is now expected to sign for newly-promoted Ipswich on a long-term deal.

This appears to be a smart and sensible move for Johnson, who was unlikely to get much playing time at West Ham regardless of manager.

Before leaving the Hammers today, the 24-year-old left a farewell note to the club, its fans and staff.

In it, Johnson sent a message to new West Ham boss Lopetegui after his snub.

Johnson’s message to new West Ham boss Lopetegui after snub

In a classy manner, Johnson wished Lopetegui well despite his rejection of the latest attempt to keep him at the London Stadium.

There was also a big indication that he was definitely going to join another Premier League team.

“Thank you to everyone associated with West Ham United for supporting me over the last 17 years and developing me into a first-team player…” Johnson told the club’s website.

“I just want to be known and remembered for my time at West Ham, for playing with a smile and for really enjoying my football. It’s really important to me.

“I wish West Ham all the best for the upcoming season under the new head coach and of course I will miss all my team-mates and staff, as well as the supporters.

“West Ham will always be a part of my life that I will remember with fondness and lots of love. I have become a better young man and player because of West Ham, so finally a huge thank you to the club!

Classy Johnson will receive a warm welcome on his return to West Ham

That kind of attitude will go down well with West Ham fans. And when Johnson faces his former team, he will certainly get a warm welcome.

Despite the club’s refusal of new contract offers, relations appear to be fairly cordial between the Hammers, Johnson and Mubama.

The club published an article thanking both players for their contribution as their departures were confirmed.

West Ham have highlighted the fact that both were part of the team that ended the club’s 43-year major trophy drought last summer.

“West Ham United would like to thank Ben and Divin for their hard work and commitment during their careers in the Claret and Blue and wish them the best for the future,” read a club statement.

They say that a hammer is always a hammer.

So fans will no doubt be keeping an eye on their progress.

And time will tell whether West Ham were right not to comply with the reported demands of the duo and their agents.
