Lots of salmon caught in the streams

FISH OF THE WEEK: Leanne Hughes caught this blue-lined emperor about a hundred meters off Pointe Gantheaume.

Well, after a few days of cool eastern mornings, it seems the bay salmon have had a change of heart once again.

I have received reports that some nice salmon and many blue noses have been caught around the streams.

Salmon species respond well to live and dead bait. In some cases, the modest sardine

outperforms live bait (God knows why – you’d be pulling your hair out for hours chasing live bait).

I’ve never really had any success targeting giant crankbaits with a lure and I think the numbers in the bay are just not at levels that cause a lot of competition between the fish to really warrant that one. fish eats a piece of plastic.

I mean, why would you when there are tons of shrimp and little fish swimming around?

On the other hand, I find that the blue nose will nibble on a lure as long as it is not something too big for him to get down.

Old Halco chrome slices and white bucktail jigs work well for me and are cheap alternatives to small diving lures like RMG Scorpions, Mann’s Spearheads, Tilsan or Nilsmaster.

These divers all work well if you feel the need to spend a little more for relatively little extra benefit; saying that most people carry a handful of these type of diving lures in the kit for targeting Barra anyway.

As we looked out over the bay, there were a few reports of good sized crabs literally crossing my plate a few times.

Not being a huge fan of crabbing myself, it’s great when your friends offer to serve them a delicious meal of chilli crab.

Some good sized crabs, up to 2kg, have been coming out of the creeks around the bay. A lot of juvenile crabs appear to be moving around. With any luck, what looks to be a good recruitment year in the bay, we could see a good fishery next year.
