Jamesport Meeting House Announces Return of Popular Jamesport Historic House Tour

Jamesport, New York (July 1, 2024) —The Jamesport Meeting House Board of Directors announced today that it is hosting a tour of the historic Jamesport House on Saturday, September 14, 2024. The tour, which last took place in 2011 and which has been reprinted by popular demand, offers a glimpse beyond the front doors and garden gates of Jamesport homes of historical and architectural significance. The tour will also include the Jamesport Meeting House, erected in 1731 and now the oldest public building on the East End of Long Island.

“Jamesport has a rich and varied history, from its founding as a whaling port in the 1830s to becoming a resort destination later in the 19th century, and for the residential community, it’s today,” said Richard Wines, president of the Jamesport Meeting House and a local historian. “The homes on display reflect the transitions within the community over the centuries.”

More than a dozen homes will be included in the tour, most located in the South Jamesport Historic District. These include some of the first homes built in the new harbor in the 1830s, as well as those erected later in the 19th century.th The homes consist of 19th century and newer residences designed by noted local architects. Architectural styles range from Victorian Gothic in an old Methodist campground, to Greek Revival, Italianate, and even Mid-Century Modern. Homes range from a modest cape built by a ship’s carpenter – with multiple later extensions and beautiful gardens – to a sprawling ranch-style house that was previously a potato grading warehouse. Several of the homes feature interesting interior design features and art collections.

Tickets for the tour will be $60 per person in advance, $75 on the day of the tour. Advance tickets will be available for purchase at www.jamesportmeetinghouse.org beginning in July. All proceeds will benefit the 1731 Meeting House. Tickets are limited.

The tour will begin at the Jamesport Meeting House located at 1590 Main Rd. The homes are all located in or near South Jamesport, within three-quarters of a mile of each other. Tour participants are encouraged to walk or bike, as street parking is limited.
