Nine flights to and from Wellington have been cancelled and several others delayed due to heavy rain and strong winds persisting across the country.

Wellington Airport says there has been widespread disruption from bad weather outside the capital, including in Nelson.

He advises passengers to check the status of their flight directly with the airline.

Meanwhile, Wellington residents are being warned to check where they swim over the next three days as heavy rain has caused multiple sewage overflows.

The Moa Point Sewage Treatment Plant experienced larger inflows than the facility was designed for and the filtered sewage was released into the ocean approximately 2 km south of Lyall Bay.

Fully treated sewage was also discharged into Waiwhetu Creek in Lower Hutt.

Wellington Water says the water in these areas may smell and appear cloudy or cloudy.

He suggests recreational users stay away for two to three days.

Earlier in the evening, surface flooding blocked the left lane of State Highway 2 from Korokoro Road to Dowse Drive Road, but the New Zealand Transport Agency said the lane was now clear and traffic flow had improved.

Interislander has announced it will cancel all ferry crossings between Tuesday night and Thursday morning due to bad weather.
