A holidaymaker became furious after an estate agent scheduled an open inspection while he stayed at a guesthouse.

The Australian explained that he had booked a room through Booking.com when he was suddenly told that several people would be coming for an inspection.

“At 11:45 we were informed that starting at noon there would be an open house for people interested in purchasing the house and to allow access to our bedroom,” they wrote on Reddit.

“The real estate agent arrived, we let the first group into the room because we were a little confused as to what was going on.

“We told the second group that we didn’t want to enter the room as they were just random people off the street, we had paid for this accommodation and our valuables were all in the room – they let themselves in anyway!

“From then on, I had to sit in the room and tell people to get out when they came in.”

Social media users were horrified by the experience, with many encouraging the traveler to file a complaint with Booking.com.

“How detached from humanity must someone be to make a decision like that,” one wrote.

“If this happened to me I would be furious. Completely unacceptable,” added another.

“This is incredibly illegal,” commented a third.

Purcell Property agent Ned Pearson-Bourke said tenants should be given at least seven days’ notice if the agent plans to carry out an inspection.

“You agree in advance and say, ‘Every Saturday we do this inspection this time,’ and you can kind of plan out a little road map,” he said.

“And the people in the accommodation have every right to refuse to allow that to happen.” »

Mr Pearson-Bourke said being given 15 minutes’ notice before an inspection was “absolutely outrageous” and “unethical”.

“If you have someone who is willing to spend a lot of money to stay in a house, they pay that money knowing that they will have an uninterrupted stay during that time,” he explained.

“We sell a lot of properties that are listed for short term rental and it’s just a matter of contacting the owner to find out when they are available to show and when they are not.

“It is absolutely forbidden to think about showing the property when someone already resides there.”

When asked about the Redditor’s claims, he said: “This situation should never happen.”

“It almost tarnishes the image of the agency and that of Booking.com.”

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Booking.com for comment.
