Silent Hill creator doesn’t care if Slitterhead is his last game, because his ‘final mission’ is to prepare young developers for the future

Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama and director of the upcoming Slitterhead says he won’t be “unsatisfied” even if it’s the last game he makes.

It’s been quite a while since a new game has been made by Toyama, who is behind the very first Silent Hill, as well as titles like the Siren series and Gravity Rush. Gravity Rush 2 was the last game the director directed, in fact, back in 2017, and later this year he is set to release Slitterhead, the first title from his new studio Bokeh Game Studio. While Toyama has been in the industry for many years now, he’s not that old, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t thinking about his own future as a developer. In an interview with GamesRadar, the developer spoke about his hopes for the future and what he plans to do in the industry.

“From a personal perspective, I’m going to be 55,” Toyama said. “I don’t think I’d be unsatisfied even if this was the last game I made.” It’s worth noting that he’s made it clear that he has no intention of stopping making games, but what he’s thinking about most is how he can help future game developers succeed. “I opened this studio and we actually have a lot of new employees coming in, younger employees. I’m more concerned about what I can leave behind for them. Obviously, I’m not saying this is my last game. But I think my last mission is to leave a path for these young creators to work on what they want.”

It’s a great feeling to see, especially because the industry often keeps the same names at the top of the food chain, so I hope Bokeh Game Studio gets the opportunity to allow young talent to flourish somewhere down the line.

The studio finally showed off some Slitterhead gameplay footage at Summer Game Fest last month, and it looks decidedly awful (in a good way). Luckily, the release date isn’t too far away either, as it’s currently scheduled for November 8 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
