Perth and Kinross-shire candidate votes concerned over Royal Mail error

A Perthshire general election candidate has said a Royal Mail error could cost her votes.

Independent candidate Sally Hughes told the PA her leaflets were plastered on doors in the neighbouring Angus and Perthshire Glens constituency rather than in the Perth and Kinross-shire seat she is contesting.

Leaflets sent by former MP and SNP Perth and Kinross-shire candidate Pete Wishart were also misdelivered.

Each candidate standing in a constituency is entitled to a free distribution of leaflets by Royal Mail.

However, Ms Hughes, a retired Tayside police officer, pointed out that her election material had been dropped off at letterboxes in Spittalfield, Meikleour, Caputh, Stanley and Bankfoot in the Angus and Perthshire Glens constituency.

She filed a complaint with the Royal Mail and the Electoral Commission.

South of the border, it emerged last week that leaflets sent by Conservative candidate and party chairman Richard Holden ended up arriving at addresses in a neighbouring Essex constituency.

Ms Hughes, who funded her campaign through crowdfunding and her own money, said: “As an independent candidate, name recognition is a much bigger issue for me than as an incumbent, and financial resources are more limited.
