Miami Heat’s quiet offseason continues with Donovan Mitchell’s contract extension

The Miami Heat’s disappointing summer continues as the Cleveland Cavaliers sign Donovan Mitchell to a maximum contract extension.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Mitchell has agreed to a three-year, $150.3 million contract that includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. The Cavs now join a long list of Eastern Conference teams that are in the running for the title next season. The Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers have made much-needed trades, leaving the Heat far behind.

Mitchell was the most rumored target for the Heat, largely due to his connection to All-Star great Bam Adebayo. The All-Stars are close friends, with Adebayo even publicly recruiting the Cavs guard via a comedic social media post. Mitchell was not only a speculated target, but a desirable one at that. His combination of balanced attack and playoff excellence would have been a perfect fit in the Heat’s system.

Heat fans, while frustrated, aren’t ready to give up hope and have turned their attention to Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young. The Hawks parted ways with Young’s guard partner Dejounte Murray for a rather modest fee, meaning Miami management could likely afford the asking price. Their deal reportedly focuses on guard Tyler Herro and draft capital, along with a few minor assets.

With Herro seemingly relishing some tough messaging directed at the Heat on Monday, making a respectable push for Young isn’t out of the question.
