County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez is pleased that the 836 Metro Express bus line “has become a popular bus route attracting select riders,” as he said in a resolution submitted to the commission Tuesday, but it has become so popular that it “often exceeds capacity, with many riders having to stand for the entire trip.”

Metrobus 836 Express route provides essential weekday express service in the east-west corridor, running from the Dolphin Station Park and Ride to downtown Miami along State Road 836.

The number of stops is limited, as is the purpose of an express route. It stops at the Overtown/Lyric Theatre Metrorail Station, the Brightline MiamiCentral Station, the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Metromover Station, the Government Center Metrorail/Metromover Station, and the Downtown Metrobus Terminal.

The route, Mr. Bermudez explains in his resolution, “aims to offer users a safe, comfortable and practical means of transport, connecting the main employment and educational areas and reducing traffic jams.”

Since express lines have limited stops, the resolution states, a passenger who does not have a seat may be required to stand for long periods.

The 836 Express has a 40-minute “headroom,” a measure of the frequency of service provided on the line. The line’s intervals were previously shorter, the resolution notes.

The resolution, adopted unanimously by the commission, calls on the county to implement a plan “to eliminate overcrowding…including adjusting the number and frequency of buses serving the route.”
