The History of the Olympic Games

The modern Olympic Games, or Olympic Games, are held every four years, as in leap years. Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been held every two years during the four-year Olympiad.

The modern Olympic Games we know today are inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896.

Edwin Flack, an accountant and Australian champion runner, is considered Australia’s first Olympian after travelling by sea to the Athens Games where he dominated. He won the 800 metres and 1500 metres sprints, competed in the marathon and won a bronze medal in tennis doubles, becoming an Australian hero!
