What a wonder! The new PSG away jersey inspired by the Eiffel Tower

Paris Saint-Germain have unveiled their new away kit for the 2024-25 season, and have taken inspiration from a seemingly obvious but underused source.

While the colours are what you’d expect from a PSG jersey, what sets the latest jersey apart is the large splashed graphic on the front that evokes the French capital’s most famous landmark: the Eiffel Tower.

This is not the first time that a stylised silhouette of the Tower has graced PSG’s jerseys, with the new outfit taking direct inspiration from the white home jerseys worn by the Ligue 1 side in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

A very similar red and blue brushstroke effect image of the iconic wrought iron construction appeared on two PSG kits used between 1990 and 1992, with the contemporary update featuring the modern iteration of the classic graphic.

It was not a particularly remarkable period for PSG, who finished ninth and third in Ligue 1 in 1990-91 and 1991-92, without progressing in the domestic cups on offer. Times have changed.

Either way, it is perhaps fitting that the club have chosen to revisit their Eiffel Tower jerseys three decades on as Paris prepares to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, with sports fans from around the world set to descend on the city ahead of a summer of elite action.
