Medicine Hat College – Nursing Assistant Program Now Available to Grasslands Students

Opening the doors to high school students interested in a career in health care, Grasslands School Division is partnering with Medicine Hat College (MHC) to offer a new dual credit opportunity.

Students in grades 11 and 12 can now earn credits toward the Nursing Assistant Certificate, offered at MHC’s Brooks campus.

Katie Graham, assistant superintendent of the Grasslands School Division, says the program provides students with the opportunity to earn high school credits, jump-start their careers and connect with the broader community.

“We are excited to offer the Health Care Assistant program through our partnership with Medicine Hat College. This program will provide our students with the opportunity to explore and begin their careers in health care while they are still in high school, which is a powerful motivator. We anticipate this will benefit not only our students, but also our local communities where they will work after graduation.”

Emphasizing flexibility, the majority of the program can be completed online, with opportunities for hands-on learning and lab work as the course progresses.

MHC School of Health and Community Services Dean Jason Openo says the partnership is a way to address the need for health-care professionals in southern Alberta.

“There is a great need for health care aides across Alberta and we are excited that this partnership will help high school students accelerate their entry into a health care career. This partnership with Grasslands allows us to work together to address a significant workplace need in our region.”
