Mayor Wayne Brown Has ‘Biden Moment’, Reveals Confidential Land Purchase Offer at Council Meeting

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown had a self-described “Biden moment” when he revealed confidential information about a land deal at a council meeting, referencing the US president’s frequent mental lapses.

Brown apologized for his gaffe, retracted his inaccurate remarks and explained that he believed the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee meeting had moved to the confidential section where the public would be excluded.

He was talking about land affected by Cyclone Gabrielle in Muriwai that the council could buy to protect other homes from future landslides. Brown revealed the six-figure sum the council was prepared to pay.

“I bet they’re willing to sell for that price,” Brown said after reading the money being offered.

Brown was quickly arrested and several people tried to stop him from speaking.
