Lady Victoria Starmer prepares to move into Downing Street.

Her husband Sir Keir Starmer won a historic landslide and will soon form a new government.

Lady Starmer has never given an interview – and according to Mr KeirThis is not about to change.

However, she remained discreetly at his side; there when he took his seat at Holborn and St Pancras in a historic election, delivered his victory speech and was at his side to meet the King.

Unlike Rishi Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty, who presented him with a speech at the conservative conference and gave a preview in front of the camera interview with Grazia Where she spoke of household chores and her favourite family activities, we do not often see or hear of Lady Victoria.

Here we take a closer look at what we know about the UK’s new ‘First Lady’.

From a career in law to the NHS

Like her husband, Lady Victoria trained as a lawyer and the couple met through work.

She now works in occupational health for the NHS – a role she loves, Sir Keir said in an interview with the Sunday Mirror.

His job gives him insight into how the health care system works, he said.

“I have a direct daily insight into the challenges of the NHS and staff morale.”

She will “absolutely” continue to work for the NHS if Sir Keir becomes prime minister, he told The Times: “She wants it and she loves it.”

A brief appearance during the campaign

Amid a flurry of press over why Lady Starmer was not seen on the campaign trail, Sir Keir shared a photo of them at Taylor Swift’s Eras tour in London.

Beth Rigby, Sky News’ political editor, said on Podcast on electoral dysfunction there seemed to be an element of the photo that was “choreographed.”

“I think maybe there was something about reminding everyone that he’s married to Vic… just inserting it in a very discreet, but very clear way,” she said.

Former Labour councillor Ayesha Hazarika told the podcast that the way the couple had approached this campaign showed a move away from the “1980s” stance of “I’m the man and this is my political trophy wife”.

This reflects the fact that she is “a modern, professional and established woman in her own right,” she said.

A fiercely private family life

Sir Keir and Lady Victoria have two children together and live in Camden, in his Holborn and St Pancras constituency.

They do not mention their children’s names in public.

Lady Victoria has largely kept out of the limelight – she has never given an interview and “we will continue to do so”, Sir Keir told The Times:.

“I’m not going to pretend it’s easy for her, because it’s not. She wants to move on with her life,” he said.

“It’s a massive intrusion when you have media outside the home. It’s inhibiting for the whole family.

“It has an impact on her and it will have an even greater impact if we have the privilege of making it happen.”

The prime minister’s wife is Jewish and Sir Keir has spoken of maintaining the tradition of Friday night family dinners, where they are often joined by his father for prayers.

“It’s just about being with family,” he told the Jewish Chronicle in 2020.

“It’s about being a little more disciplined, staying home with our kids and our family – they grow up fast.”

How the couple met

Sir Keir described their first meeting on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories show in 2020.

“I was working on a case in court and everything depended on the accuracy of the documents.

“I asked my colleagues who had written these documents. They said it was a woman called Victoria. So I said we had to contact her.”

He said he heard her whisper, “Who the hell does he think he is?” before hanging up.

Undeterred, he asked her out to a pub in Camden. It was in the early 2000s and the couple married in 2007.
