Goal: No longer accept a payment method

(NEXSTAR) – Shopping at Target later this month? You plan to leave your checkbook at home.

The national retailer announced plans to stop accepting personal checks as of July 15, due to a lack of customers still using the payment method.

“Due to extremely low volumes, we will no longer be accepting personal checks starting July 15,” a company representative wrote in a statement shared with Nexstar. “We have taken several steps to notify customers in advance to make the payment experience easier and more efficient.”

Target customers aren’t the only ones moving away from personal checks. The Federal Reserve has seen a steady decline in the number of personal checks written over the past few decades, with recent data showing there were only about 12 billion in 2021, down from 20.2 billion in 2015.

While it no longer accepts checks as of the 15th, the Target spokesperson touted the various forms of payment the retailer currently accepts, as well as a few that have been added in recent years.

“Target is committed to creating a simple and convenient payment experience, and that includes providing our guests with multiple ways to pay, including our new Target Circle Cards (formerly known as Target RedCard); cash; digital wallets; SNAP/EBT; buy now, pay later; and credit and debit cards,” the spokesperson wrote.

As of Friday, Target’s official website still listed “personal checks” among the payment methods the company accepts for in-store purchases.

According to the site, forms of payment that are generally not accepted in most cases include foreign checks, foreign currency, shopping mall gift cards, chamber bucks (certificates issued by local chambers of commerce), money orders, cashier’s checks, company checks, and any merchant gift cards that are not Target gift cards or Starbucks gift cards (the latter of which are intended for use at Starbucks stores located inside Target stores).
