Prodigy leaves plenty of room for more seasons

WARNING! This article contains spoilers from the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy, currently streaming on Netflix.

Netflix released all twenty episodes of the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy on July 1st, and as creators Kevin and Dan Hageman have previously said, it could be considered a fitting conclusion to the series. There were a lot of loose ends to tie up, but thankfully, the door is still wide open for new adventures for the crew, especially given their new mission.

Not only were Dal, Murf, Zero, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, Gwyn, and newcomer Ma’Jel given field assignments with Starfleet as ensigns, but they were also assigned to a new version of the Protostar, where their adventures could continue. Not quite what they were used to, but at least this time their travels would be in the name of the Federation.

This time, it’s Gwyn who’s in charge of the ship, not Dal, after she proved herself a worthy leader and Dal realized he could be a dedicated number one. And the new crew is tasked with going into space and building new relationships while the rest of Starfleet and the Federation focus on the aftermath of the attack on Mars. It also opens another door for the series to continue the adventures of Admiral Janeway, Captain Chakotay, and the Doctor. Voyager-A will certainly be needed in the fight. And with the crew now taking charge of the new Protostar, that leaves either a new ship for Captain Chakotay or perhaps the chance to join Admiral Janeway on the bridge of Voyager.

The new ensigns are also accompanied by an updated version of the Janeway hologram that remembers everything about them, thanks to the Doctor’s convenient download of her program, and she’ll be there to guide them just like before. Essentially, the series has come full circle for the young team, from an old, stolen version of the Protostar to a brand new version of the ship that was given to them because they earned it.

Yes, this season could indeed be the end of the series, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of other avenues that could be taken for viewers to follow the new Starfleet crew, and based on the reactions on social media, this is exactly what dedicated fans want to see happen. Let’s hope Netflix understands why it has to pull the plug on Season 3!
